IFFHS AWARDS – THE WORLD’S BEST REFEREE 2008 : ROBERTO ROSETTI (ITALY)
Born on 18 September 1967 in Turin, Roberto Rosetti is counted as one of the all time Top referees in the World.
He started refereeing in 1983 , whistled Serie C matches from 1994 to 1996 and took in charge his first match in Serie A in 1996 , 29 years old !
He was Serie A Referee during 14 years (1996-2010) and became FIFA Refereee in 2002 until 2010. He was crowned Italian Serie A Referee each year from 2006 to 2009 and won the IFFHS World Award THE WORLD’S BEST REFEREE in 2008 ! He directed 187 Serie A matches, 35 Serie B matches, 27 UEFA Champions League, 10 UEFA Europa League
He directed many great matches, 4 UEFA Euro matches, the Euro 2008 final between Germany and Spain. For the the World Cup 2006 and 2010,he whistled 6 matches in total, 2 in South Africa, where he announced his retirement following the tournament.
Rosetti took position with the Italian Football Federation and became Referee designator, before moving as UEFA Observator and since the 1 August 2018, President of the UEFA Referee Commission, taking the succession of Pierluigi Collina in charge during 8 years.
